The first speed skating club was opened in 1604 in Edinburgh, Scotland. The first international friendly match between UK and USA took place in 1763. The first speed skating rules were formulated in 1772 in England.
Speed skating has been featured as a sport in the Winter Olympics since the first winter games in 1924. Women’s events were added to the Olympic program for the first time in 1960. Competition included four events: on 500, 1000, 1500, 5000, and 10000 meters as well as all-round competition.
