Curling originated in XVI century in Scotland. In XIX century there already were a few different versions of curling: Scottish, German, and Swiss.
Kilsyth Curling Club claims to be the first club in the world, having been formally constituted in 1716. The first worldwide curling men championship was held in 1959 in Edinburgh, the first women championship – in 1979. Curling was included in the Olympic program in 1998 during the Nagano Winter Olympic games. Curling was included into Winter Universiade program as an additional discipline in 2003 in Tarvisio, Italy.
